The Story Behind Bike and Sol
Bike and Sol started with a simple idea: teach kids how to work and enjoy the ride of their lives. Back when this all began, it was just me, a shed, and a few neighborhood kids eager to learn how to fix bikes. What started as an after-school project to keep kids busy has grown into something I never could have imagined.
It all began because I saw a need. A lot of kids didn’t know how to work. They also didn’t have access to bikes or even know how to fix one, and that felt like an opportunity to do something meaningful. A bike is more than just a way to get from point A to point B—it’s freedom. It’s independence. It’s a chance to feel the wind on your face and believe you can go anywhere. Learning to work on them gave a sense of confidence and learned the art of work.
At first, it was pretty informal. The kids would show up, learn how to fix a bike, and earn one of their own. That’s where the “Earn A Bike” program got its start. It was never just about the bikes, though. It was about showing them that hard work pays off, that they can build something with their own hands, and that they matter. Seeing their pride when they rode off on a bike they earned was everything.
Over time, the little program outgrew the shed. It turned into a nonprofit bike shop that’s now a cornerstone of our community. At Bike and Sol, we fix bikes, sell refurbished ones, and offer new e-bikes. But more than that, we’ve created a space where people can connect. Kids, parents, cyclists, commuters—they all find their way here. It’s about more than bikes; it’s about community.
The stories that have come out of this journey are what keep me going. There’s the kid who learned how to fix a flat and went on to become a bike mechanic. Or the family that discovered a love of cycling together after finding affordable bikes at the shop. And then there’s Team Bike and Sol Racing—a group of passionate cyclists who bring a whole new energy to what we do, proving that cycling is for everyone.
Bike and Sol has always been about more than just running a shop. It’s about creating healthier, happier lives through bicycles. Whether it’s giving someone the ability to get to work, helping a kid build confidence, or simply sharing the joy of a ride, we’re here for it.
Looking back, I’m blown away by how far we’ve come. None of this would’ve been possible without the amazing people who’ve been part of this journey. As we look ahead, I’m excited to keep building this community, one ride at a time. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the bikes—it’s about the people who ride them.

Team Bike and Sol Racing (TeamBSR)
Team Bike and Sol Racing (TeamBSR) is more than just a racing team—it’s a family of riders who share a passion for cycling, competition, and community. We’re here to represent what Bike and Sol is all about: growth, resilience, and the sheer joy of the ride. Whether it’s on the racecourse or in our day-to-day lives, we push each other to be better and celebrate every victory—big or small.
The team was founded by myself and our Team Director, Ethan Hendricks. Ethan is a professional racer and a former student of Bike and Sol. His journey from learning bike mechanics and riding as a kid in our programs to competing at the highest levels of the sport is a testament to what Bike and Sol is all about. Together, we saw an opportunity to create something bigger than ourselves—a team that inspires, connects, and promotes the joy of cycling.
TeamBSR thrives on an intergenerational system that brings riders of all ages together. This unique structure allows younger riders to learn from seasoned racers while fostering a sense of mentorship and shared growth. As part of our commitment to supporting the next generation, riders under 18 race for free and receive free coaching. It’s our way of ensuring that cost is never a barrier for young riders to experience the sport and develop their skills.
The team started as an extension of the Bike and Sol mission. We saw an opportunity to bring people together around a shared love for cycling while also creating a space to foster personal and team growth. It’s about more than just winning races (though we’re not shy about competing). It’s about showing up, putting in the work, and having a blast while doing it.
Our team is made up of riders from all backgrounds and skill levels. Some of us are seasoned racers, while others are just getting into the sport. What unites us is a commitment to each other, to the cycling community, and to riding with purpose. Every race is a chance to inspire others to get involved, to show them that cycling can be for anyone, and to share the camaraderie that makes this sport so special.
One of the coolest things about TeamBSR is the way it connects back to Bike and Sol. Racing brings energy and visibility to our shop and our mission. It’s another way to engage with people and get them excited about cycling. Plus, it’s a ton of fun to see the pride and encouragement that spills over from the shop to the racecourse and back again.
Promoting mental health is also a key part of what we do. We believe that cycling isn’t just great for physical fitness—it’s a powerful tool for mental well-being. Riding gives people a chance to clear their minds, set goals, and find joy in movement. For us, every ride is an opportunity to encourage self-care, mindfulness, and connection.
At the end of the day, TeamBSR is about community. It’s about lifting each other up, challenging ourselves, and enjoying the ride—together. Whether we’re training for a big race, volunteering at a local event, or just heading out for a casual ride, we’re building something special. It’s not just a team; it’s a movement. And we’re inviting everyone to come along for the ride.

Background on Community Development Projects
Community development has always been at the heart of my work, driven by a desire to connect people and build a stronger, healthier environment for everyone. Over the years, I’ve been privileged to lead and contribute to several initiatives that have had a lasting impact on our local area. Here are some of the key projects and partnerships I’ve been involved with:
Halloween Parade
The Halloween Parade has become a beloved tradition in our community, and I’ve been fortunate to play a role in organizing and supporting this annual event. It’s more than just costumes and candy; it’s about bringing families and neighbors together in celebration. The parade fosters a sense of unity and belonging while giving local businesses and organizations an opportunity to engage with the community. Seeing kids light up with excitement and families enjoying the event is a reminder of the joy these gatherings bring.
Upper Perk Code Blue Shelter
The Upper Perk Code Blue Shelter is a vital resource for our community, providing a safe, warm place for those experiencing homelessness during the coldest nights of the year. My involvement with this initiative has been deeply meaningful, as it’s about offering more than just shelter—it’s about dignity, compassion, and hope. Working alongside other dedicated volunteers, we’ve been able to create a space that reflects the care and support our community can offer to those in need.
Upper Perk Homelessness Coalition Street Team
Building on the mission of the Code Blue Shelter, the Upper Perk Homelessness Coalition Street Team focuses on outreach and advocacy. This team works directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, providing resources, guidance, and a listening ear. It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them take steps toward stability. Being part of this coalition has shown me the power of collaboration and the importance of addressing the root causes of homelessness.
Chamber of Commerce
As an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to local business development and economic growth. The Chamber serves as a hub for networking and collaboration, helping to create a thriving local economy. My work with the Chamber aligns with my passion for building connections and supporting entrepreneurship, ensuring that businesses in our community have the tools and support they need to succeed.
Ties to Local Schools
My connection to local schools has been a cornerstone of my community development efforts. Whether through Bike and Sol’s “Earn A Bike” program, speaking engagements, or partnerships with educators, I’ve been able to engage with students and provide opportunities for learning and growth. Schools are a critical part of our community, and I’m proud to work alongside teachers, administrators, and parents to support the next generation. From mentoring students to organizing events that promote health and wellness, these partnerships have been some of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
Looking Ahead
Each of these projects is a reflection of my commitment to building community and fostering a sense of togetherness. Whether it’s through creating spaces for celebration, addressing critical needs, or supporting local businesses and schools, my goal is to make a positive, lasting impact. As I look ahead, I’m excited to continue collaborating with others who share a vision for a stronger, more connected community.
